Healthcare should be a free legal right throughout all established countries in the world. Healthcare ensures the maintaining of ones health through the treatment and prevention of disease.
Should a person be left for dead if they don’t have money to spend on medical bills? I cannot begin to imagine the grief felt by families upon hearing the death of their loved ones and I am sure it’s a form of suffering no one would want to go through.
An example of an established country which forces its people to foot their own bill is the United States of America. The USA government only provides subsidised medical care and only fully funds for the poorest and the oldest of the population. The USA currently runs an insurance system whereby a public insurance firm covers the costs of medical bills, but this is after the payment of continuous monthly premiums which is partly covered by the government. Although this method may be the cheapest for American citizens, it has been met with opposition by people who believe that the healthcare system is being controlled by the government and should be inclusive of taxation. It is very rare for a first world country to degrade the welfare of its people by charging for treatment. There are currently 64 million Americans who cannot afford healthcare in the USA. Many Americans who cannot afford medical bills struggle to make ends meet. For instance, If a child gets ill, the parent will not be able to take them to the doctor and will try as much home remedies instead, if this condition starts to worsen, they will be left with no choice but to the give up the house or survive without food, gas or electricity. This is something we should not be seeing in the 21st century.
The USA is a major contributor in foreign aid as it was recorded to have provided $35 Billion to poor countries. Some people may question whether this is in good faith or if it is to pull one over on the population and use this as an excuse to fund other projects. A famous saying goes, ‘charity starts from home’ It comes to my understanding that the USA is more concentrated on increasing the well being of other regions when the lasting problem at home is yet to be addressed. The one question that sticks to everyone’s minds is, ‘why?’.
Moreover, if made free, the amount of people buying over the counter drugs will decrease which is also likely to decrease the amount of people that overdose or take the wrong medicine. All in all, the USA will be a much more beneficial place to live leading to investment and higher living standards.
Health Care is expensive and very few can afford to pay the full costs. Therefore there is health insurance, health insurance is a scheme which covers all of an individual’s medical and surgical bills for a monthly payment and excess. This usually turns out cheaper than the medical bill itself. But for the 46 million people in poverty in the States even this is unaffordable.According to Sireesha Manne a staff attorney at the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, “For those with very low wages trying to raise kids, after paying for housing, electricity, food, transportation, and child care, asking people to pay another $50 or $100 a month, that’s just out of reach,” I strongly believe that this eventually puts a price on someone’s life
On the contrary, does paying for healthcare make it more efficient. In the United States the five year survival rate for all cancer patients is 64.6%, which is 10% better than the five year survival rate in Europe combined which is 51.6%. According to a 2009 study from Harvard researchers, a lack in health insurance means an increase in deaths by 44,789. If the healthcare system had much more funding from the government this figure would see a dramatic drop.
Furthermore, this cannot be said for the United States as in 2012 alone it had spent $37,680,000,000 on foreign aid. Although foreign aid promotes peace and prosperity it still leads to civil unrest. Some may argue that if healthcare was made free, this would have an enduring effect on taxes. To compare, the UK healthcare system is also funded through taxes and it very beneficial to the population therefore rendering this ideology incorrect.
To conclude, the USA should provide healthcare for free to its population. The reasons being, we could see an increase in employment, more people will have jobs, we will see a decrease in hospital related crimes and overdoses, the average death rate will decrease. On its journey to provide fully covered health care, some sacrifices may have to be made. Furthermore, the USA will gain economic advantages such as an increase in employment, more people will have jobs, we will see a decrease in hospital related crimes and overdoses, the average death rate will also see a decline as more people are being treated.
